$5,000 Biofuel Blender Pump Incentives Available!
Reimbursements of up to $5,000 are currently available for the installation or conversion of fueling pumps to dispense ethanol-blended fuels. The goal of the Michigan Blender Pump Incentive Project is to increase blended ethanol infrastructure along major highway corridors and in urban areas in Michigan at publicly accessible retail locations.

Vilsack’s Emphasis: Make Ethanol More Available
USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack expects a forthcoming round of federal grants to help start non-corn-based advanced biofuel plants outside the nation’s traditional ethanol heartland boosting support for ethanol.
The government plans to announce measures in early 2011 to provide support for advanced biofuels and cellosic ethanol plans “in all areas of the country.”

USDA Joins FlexFuel Vehicle Awareness Effort
The Clean Fuels Foundation announced today that they are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expand public awareness on fueling options available to owners of flexible fuel vehicles (FFV).
The FFV awareness effort is targeting several areas across the country to increase the use of ethanol blends in FlexFuel vehicles. “Breaking through the blend wall begins with the 8 million FlexFuel vehicles on the road today, and reaching these drivers to make sure they know they can use ethanol blends up to 85%,” said Agriculture Under Secretary for Rural Development Dallas Tonsager. Tonsager also noted FFVs of any age can use E15 or any other gasoline ethanol blend up to E85 and can take advantage of favorable market pricing on these blends when offered.

California to host first 2011 ethanol workshop
Rio Hondo Community College in Whittier, Calif., will host the first of the 2011 ethanol workshops being held as part of the Clean Transportation Education Project, a collaboration of the Clean Cities Coalition and the N.C. Solar Center at North Carolina State University and Wake Technical Community College, funded through the U.S. DOE.
The California Ethanol Symposium: An Examination of Demand vs. Availability will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14, at the Rio Hondo Community College. Other workshops are being planned for April 14 in New Orleans and Sept. 14 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Protec Fuel Opens First E85 Station with Imaging
Protec Fuel announces the opening of an E85 pump at 5264 New Jesup Highway in Brunswick, Georgia. Offering the clean burning, alternative fuel, Mr. Pete’s is the first station to have Protec Fuel’s imaging on their dispenser.
E85 is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petroleum and can be used in over 8,000 FFVs across the area. The alternative fuel has been proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the nation’s dependency on foreign petroleum.

Research to Study Impact of Ethanol on Older Vehicles
Kettering University in Flint, Michigan is one of several that have been tapped by the Department of Energy (DOE) to study the impact of higher ethanol blends on older vehicles.
The use of up to 15 percent ethanol in gasoline for 2007 model year vehicles or newer has been approved by the federal government, while the use of E15 in model year 2001-2006 vehicles is still being evaluated. The research at Kettering will look at vehicles older than 2000 model year, for which the use of higher ethanol blends has been denied by the EPA.

Broin, Thornton’s awarded for work in Indiana
Two companies received awards for their work in Indiana this December. Jeff Broin, CEO of Poet LLC, and Thornton’s Inc., a gasoline/convenience chain retailer with 36 E85 stations, were both honored during the Greater Indiana Clean Cities awards ceremony. Broin received the 2010 Paul Dana Excellence in Bioenergy Leadership Award from the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. Thornton’s was awarded for outstanding achievement in the implementation and promotion of E85 retail locations from the Greater Indiana Clean Cities Coalition.
Broin was honored for exemplifying leadership and innovative vision in the bioenergy industry. The Paul Dana Award was established in honor of Dana, an Indy Racing League driver, who died in a racing accident in 2006.
